This dire warning comes not from an extremist but from NBC News, summarizing a report from The Global Commission on the Economics of Water. https://watercommission.org/home-3/ This global OECD coalition describes how water scarcity is a spreading problem that will have a “seismic effect on humans and the environment.” Threats to water sources and land mismanagement could lower growth in high-income countries by 8% and drop GDP by 10-15% in low-income regions. Hunger, famine, and malnutrition will rise.
Rather than surrender, the WTO’s Director General finds this a call to action – to transform the economics of water. To do this, we must move water from source to field efficiently, with minimal waste. Solar power, efficient water movement, and drip irrigation can replace agriculture based on fossil-fuel powered spray irrigation with targeted, sustainable water infrastructure. Crop yields and farm incomes can rise without assaults on the climate. “We must reframe our approach to water,” the Commission proclaims.
